The CMHP designation is a professional credential for an unlicensed mental health practitioner with advanced education and on-the-job experience providing direct services to clients in both inpatient and outpatient mental health treatment settings. The CMHP requires a minimum of a bachelor’s degree. The CMHP is a professional designation of competency and does not grant practice rights.

The Florida Certification Board (FCB) is a nationally recognized, non-profit professional credentialing organization. In our 25+ years of experience, we have certified over 10,000 health and human services professionals performing work in the related fields of addictions, prevention, criminal justice, mental health, and behavioral health.

In order to be certified as a Mental Health Professional in the State of Florida, you must:

  1. Meet specific competency and ethical conduct requirements;
  2. Possess minimum work and supervision experience requirements;
  3. Possess minimum education and training requirements;
  4. Pass the written exam; and
  5. Complete minimum continuing education credits annually to maintain a current knowledge base.

Definition of a Certified Mental Health Professional (CMHP)

The Certified Mental Health Professional is an unlicensed practitioner who possesses competency in providing direct services in mental health inpatient and outpatient settings. The role of the Mental Health Professional includes but is not limited to:

  • Performing screening and assessment activities with service recipients.
  • Focusing on person-centered services and recovery plans.
  • Establishing a helping relationship and encouraging the service recipient to become actively involved in his/her treatment.
  • Coordinating referrals and case management activities.
  • Working in a professional and ethical manner
  • The degrees from our training program are highly appreciated by treatment centers.

Minimum Requirements:

Content-Specific Training

Assessment – 66 hours • Person Centered Service/Recovery Planning – 63 hours • Counseling – 93 hours • Service Coordination – 48 hours • Professional Responsibility and Ethics – 30 hours

Related Work Experience

Formal Education Applicant must meet the minimum hours of work experience required for the and Work Experience highest degree held in a related field or 10,000 hours of related experience regardless of the level of degree held in a non-related field.

  • Master’s Degree or higher in a related field – 2,000 hours work experience
  • Bachelors Degree in a related field – 6,000 hours of work experience
  • Bachelors Degree or higher in an unrelated field – 10,000 hours of work experience

Related fields are: counseling, psychology, or social work

  • 300 hours of Direct Supervision; a minimum of 20 hours must be documented in each of the 5 performance domains
  • Written Exam 150 item, multiple-choice written exam

Our training program offers the full complement of education hours and content areas that you need to fulfill the training requirements for your certification with the Florida Certification Board.

Criminal Background Must have a clean criminal history for a minimum of 3-years prior to application for certification, including release from all sanctions. Code of Ethics Must read and sign an attestation agreeing to comply with the FCB Code of Ethical & Professional Conduct.
